Our continued support for CPAG

This year MJP Conveyancing made a one-year commitment to support Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) in their mission to end child poverty. We decided to launch a raffle via Just Giving to raise money; we reached out to businesses across the country, and we were kindly donated prizes.

As we are all aware, the past four months have been tough for everyone, but we remain committed to supporting CPAG, and we intend to proceed with the raffle. We are yet to decide a date for the draw, but please be rest assured that any donations made will still count toward a raffle entry. We will also update the list of prizes on the Just Giving page as we navigate the months ahead.

Our Director, David Pett commented.

"I know there are a large number of people who are in denial when it comes to recognising child poverty. I regret to say there are even people within my own social circle who fall into this category. Life is lived fast, the demands of work, families and the 'day to day' rigors of life leave very little time for many of us to consider the plights and hardship of others. I am guilty of this and of the subconscious blocking of what is happening immediately outside my world. The fact is child poverty very much exists in the UK and is continuing to increase, and as we come to terms with the "new normal", I am keen to raise as much money as possible for CPAG."

Here is an overview of how CPAG has been working through the current pandemic.

Supporting children through the pandemic

This is an extraordinarily difficult time for many families. The Coronavirus crisis is placing additional financial pressures on tens of thousands of families who were already struggling to get by. The struggle will sadly turn to hardship for so many. You may have seen in the news that a million people applied for the main government benefit Universal Credit in a two-week period? This is simply unprecedented.

Child Poverty Action Group has been working hard to support families through this time of national crisis:

  • Our advice line has been responding to a multitude of calls and enquiries as many people find themselves on Universal Credit, which is still under-trialled and under-funded. The teamwork hard to make sure families are getting the money they desperately need and are entitled to – so we prevent or minimise more children ending up in poverty.
  •

“The children need to print work at home. Sadly I cannot afford the printer ink.” – Lone parent

  • We have surveyed over 4,000 parents, carers and children to find out how lockdown and school closures have been affecting them. What we've found overwhelmingly is that the cost burdens of school closures have fallen most heavily on families already living on a low income. You can read the full report here
  • We’ve provided free, comprehensive and accessible materials for frontline workers supporting people in this time of crisis through our new online support platform, AskCPAG.
  • We are calling on the government to make a number of changes to Universal Credit and provide emergency support for families facing hard times. Our recommendations include: increasing child benefit by £10 per week, replacing free school meal vouchers with cash payments and urgently reviewing the earnings threshold for eligibility for free school meals.

Your support will help us to respond to the growing demands on our services and programmes. Before coronavirus, nearly one in three children were growing up in poverty. We’re doing all we can to prevent more families and children falling into hardship during this time.

There is still a lot to do, but we are grateful for your support and thanks to it, we will continue to campaign, question and challenge so that we can bring about an end to child poverty.

On behalf of the families we help, thank you to everyone at MJP Conveyancing for your generous support.
